Please join the Public Service Advisory Board for a round table discussion on the topic of public education with leaders of education in St. Louis on Friday,February 25^th, 2011 at lunchtime in AB 311. In attendance will be Robbyn Wahby, education advisor to the St. Louis mayor, and Rhonda Broussard, founder of the St. Louis Language Immersion schools. Topics of discussion will include: the charter school movement, teacher unions and teacher tenure, language immersion, and job opportunities for young lawyers in the field of public education. The first 12 students to email will receive a free lunch.

The Public Service Advisory Board invites students to attend a roundtable with Professor Karen Tokarz on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 from 12-1pm.  Professor Tokarz is the Charles Nagel Professor of Public Interest Law and Public Service as well as the Director of the Dispute Resolution Program.  The roundtable will be an opportunity for students to learn more about Professor Tokarz’s career path and academic interests.  Space is limited, so please RSVP to Lisa E. Join PSAB for an informative panel discussion about the field of Animal Law. Learn the basics about animal law, how lawyers practice in the field, and opportunities for students to get involved. Panelists will include Lynne Hartke: Animal Law Professor at SLU and member of ABA’s Animal Law Committee, Tamra Wilson Setser: Chair of the Missouri Bar’s Animal Law Committee and former Dean of the University of Missouri Law School, and Bob Baker: Executive Director of the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

Do you think you want to work in public interest?  Are you interested in public interest?  Have you ever heard of the word public or interest?

If so you would make a perfect candidate for the resume review and mock interview event held on November 6!

This event will be for 1, 2, and 3Ls.  We will have approximately 10 attorneys from the local area who are either currently practicing in the public sector or have practiced public interest law.  Students will submit their resumes to be reviewed by one of the attorneys who will then on the day of the event interview them for a “position” in their office.  There will be no formal job offers as a result of this event, but rather will be a great opportunity for networking and mastering public interest law interview techniques.

Project REACH is a program that provides re-entry assistance to recently released ex-offenders.  The mentoring program provides mentors with the opportunity to support an ex-offender who served time for a non-violent, non-sexual offense.

There will be a training session held in October here at the law school for all who are interested in joining the mentoring program.  If you are interested, please contact Jessica Mayo at jdmayo@wulaw.wustl.edu.  We want to make sure the training is held at a time that is convenient for all who would like to participate.

The Pro Bono Alliance (PBA), a part of the Public Service Advisory Board, is engaging to connect law students with local attorneys to assist them in their pro bono efforts. Through this program, law students will perform legal research and writing, and will be responsible for any other aspect of casework that their supervising attorneys assign to them. By working closely with local attorneys on substantive issues, students will gain valuable real-world legal experience and will develop relationships with legal professionals in a variety of different fields. The PBA and Washington University School of Law are endeavoring to contact as many local attorneys as possible to create a list of possible placements that are interesting, diverse, intellectually challenging, and most importantly, valuable to the community.
